Questions about TENS pain relief

How does TENS work?

Pads are placed on or near the area of pain. Soothing pulses are sent via the pads through the skin and along the nerve fibers. The pulses (controlled by the user at all times) head off and suppress pain signals to the brain. TENS also encourages the body to produce higher levels of its own natural pain killing chemicals called Endorphins and Encephalins.

What is the history of TENS?

Stone carvings from the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty in 2500 BC depict an electric fish being used to treat pain. Present day TENS began after the landmark paper by Melzack and Wall 1965, entitled "Pain Mechanism: A New Theory." An enormous amount of scientific research followed, resulting in the therapy used today which is readily available on the Internet.

For how long does the pain relief last?

Some benefit for days after only a half hour treatment, whilst others need to keep their  TENS unit on for longer periods.

Questions about Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS):

Is Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) used for medical or cosmetic purposes?

Both. EMS units are fully compliant with strict medical device regulations so that our units can be used for medical purposes. However, they are also excellent for cosmetic toning and are regularly used on the abs, legs and thighs, arms and other areas of the body.

What is the difference between EMS units and those advertised on TV or in the newspapers?

Technologically, there is much similarity. However, machines are manufactured to be fully compliant with strict medical device regulations, ensuring high quality.

How does Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) work?

EMS works by stimulating muscles by means of tiny electric impulses. These impulses travel to the body from the EMS unit via electrode pads which are attached to the body. Timers on the EMS machine rhythmically contract and relax the muscles, allowing you to tone or work muscles.

What medical conditions are usually treated with EMS?

EMS units are used to treat a number of medical conditions that require muscle stimulation. The most common are:

  • Long-term disuse after fracture or prolonged bed rest.
  • Progressive strengthening for joint or muscle injury
  • Immobilised limbs
  • Atrophy Prevention
  • Bell's Palsy
  • Stress Incontinence
  • Muscle weakness
  • Improving muscle tone after weight loss or childbirth
  • Muscle spasticity following a stroke

Will EMS work for me?

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) is highly effective for both cosmetic toning and medical usage. Our EMS units are used worldwide and recommended by sports coaches, physiotherapy departments, doctors and other medical practitioners. However, for best results EMS should be accompanied with a sensible exercise program so that muscles are correctly worked.
