Heating Pads

Heating pads are often the top choice for the relief of pain in damaged muscle tissue. Muscle tension from injury can cause pain by constricting the circulation which sends pain signals to the brain. Applying heat to the affected tissue dilates the blood vessels, causing an increase in blood flow to the muscle tissue. This increased blood flow is rich in oxygen, which helps heal the damaged tissue.

Heat pads also stimulate the sensation in the skin, which decreases the transmission of pain signals to the brain. This action helps the muscle tissue to relax, thereby increasing flexibility. When the muscles are more flexible, movement is less painful. The type of heating pad recommended for use depends on the location of the damaged muscle and where the treatment will be given. For ongoing management of sports injuries, it is often necessary to use a heat wrap during activity. Other designs may be used for pain such as menstrual cramps.
